Reviving a former Essex County hospital

Paint removal project on a Grade II listed building

A local Grade II listed icon

First opened in 1820, Essex County Hospital has served patients in the Colchester community for almost two centuries.

The main building is a Grade II listed structure, and the historic facade had worn, peeling paint that required urgent attention as part of planned refurbishment works.

A challenging task…

Working with the site’s contractor Kind & Company Builders, J England Environmental hired our Quill Falcon Cyclone 60 Trailer to assist in the blasting works on site after previous attempts at removing the paint had failed.

During a previous visit in May 2024, asbestos residue and paint were successfully removed from the hospital’s basement, but the concrete and brick exterior posed a new challenge.

…with a gentle solution

Protecting the building’s historical character was crucial, and a delicate approach was needed for the success of the project. J England was tasked with removing the old paint from the brick face and concrete using our Quill Falcon Cyclone 60 Trailer without causing any damage to the structure.

Before the full-scale work could begin, test patches were carried out using the Quill Falcon Cyclone 60 Trailer. By varying the settings of the Quill Falcon Cyclone 60 Trailer the team ensured the gentle removal of paint without causing damage to the building. These tests were then signed off by the site’s primary contractor, paving the way for additional works on site.

Flawless results yet again

The all-in-one solution of the Quill Falcon Cyclone 60 Trailer allowed for easy manoeuvrability around the building’s different areas. Even the toughest-to-reach sections were effortlessly tackled, removing the paint completely without incident.

The result? With the help of Quill Falcon’s advanced dustless blasting equipment, the area was successfully cleaned, delivering a brilliant result – the building was restored and with no damage to its striking historic structure.
