A castle steeped in history
Overlooking the tranquil Firth of Clyde, Brodick Castle stands as a striking example of baronial grandeur. Its stone walls have stood as a symbol of Scottish aristocracy since 1844. Now under the care of the National Trust For Scotland, the castle has been the focus of an extensive restoration project to protect its heritage. Recently, our expertise was called upon to help uncover some of its history – quite literally.
The challenge
Our customer, LIME RICH Ltd – a leader in Scottish building restoration, working on behalf of the National Trust For Scotland, faced the challenge of eliminating multiple layers of difficult-to-remove paint that had built up over time and obscured the natural stone. The task required precision, efficiency and the right equipment capable of working in a challenging and busy environment.
Given the remote location, logistical planning played a key role in the project’s execution. The Quill Falcon Cyclone 60 Trailer was chosen for the paint removal job, which meant it could be transported quite easily on the ferry journey to the Isle of Arran before it was positioned at the front of the castle, with the 15-metre blast hose carefully fed up to a small window high above and secured into position, enabling it to reach the necessary area.
Why Quill?
The self-contained Quill Falcon Cyclone 60 Trailer is the most convenient of the Quill Falcon range as it comprises of a Quill Falcon Cyclone 60, a 115 litre water tank and a 90 or 140cfm compressor. With the limitations of the surroundings, the delicate nature of the job, and the ability to operate alongside other trades with no adverse impact, the 60T was the ideal choice for this project.
Through careful planning and utilising the right equipment for the task, we helped reveal the natural beauty of Brodick Castle’s historic stonework, ensuring its legacy continues to amaze future generations to come.
